Maramures is in the northern most part of Romania in Eastern Europe. It is surrounded on three sides by mountains. To the north it borders Ukraine divided by the Tisa River and the Maramures Mountains. For more information on the Geography of Maramures visit that page in About Maramures and Vadu Izei.
Maramures is one of the least visited and least changed areas in all of Europe. Yes, it can be difficult to get here, but because of its undisturbed beauty it is well worth the effort.
Flights can be found to airports in Bucharest. Connecting domestic flights can be arranged to the towns of Baia Mare (70 km away) or Satu Mare (100 km away). There is also a direct flight from New York to Satu Mare on Tarom Airlines.
From these towns buses, taxis or rental cars are available to Sighetu Marmatiei and most of the villages of Maramures including Vadu Izei.
Other options can be direct trains from Bucharest or Budapest by way of Cluj. There is regular sleeper train service from Bucharest to Sighetu Marmatiei daily. Sighet is only a few minutes from Vadu Izei with regular transportation available between the two communities.
Vadu Izei is centrally located at the heart of Maramures. From here all parts of this beautiful land can be reached. For more check our Tourist Information page for details on Guides.
